what's going on at dayspring?

We are Learning Such Exciting things in Language Art in this very Cold Winter! January 31, 2015

Dayspring children were so busy working in the language area. The children work with many different materials in many different ways for their speech, vocabulary, writing, reading, comprehension, even their leadership, in reading in front of their friends.

a2 a14

‘I’ is working on organizing cards for recognizing patterns.   “This is a baby lizard my mom gave me…”    ‘S’ brought a little taxidermist’s stuffed lizard and is showing and telling about it for oral language development.

a18 a8

“I spy with my eyes… something that we wear on rainy days.”  ‘A’ is matching three different animal cards for enlarging his vocabularies.

a4 a5

‘M’ is sounding out and tracing letters; “r, r, r for rose”.               “T, t, table” This table goes to “t” box.

a5-1 a6

‘N’ is matching letters with pictures on a ‘pizza wheel’ according to initial sounds .   ‘SW’ is working with sound cards, “t, m, b, and f”.

a9 a10

The children finished matching mute cards and labels to speaking cards and now are matching movable alphabet letters to the corresponding picture cards for analysis and exploration of language, all of this in preparation for reading and writing.

a11ia12

‘H’ and ‘ W’ are working with sound cards with matching word endings; “pan, man, can”, “drunk, skunk, trunk…”

a13 a15

‘P” is reading a book with long vowel words.             “I will read this book for you guys.”

a16 a19i

Children are focusing on a kindergartener’s reading.       ‘J’ created her own story with movable alphabet letters and is copying the story.

We have started ‘ballet class’ this month. Children are so excited every minute in the class.

As we all know too well, we got a lot of snow. Children really loved being outside. They shouted and laughed. They made snow balls and ran in the deep snow. They brought sleds from home and sledded on the hill. They enjoyed so much being outside in the clean, white, fresh snow.

December, the Season of Sharing Warm Things with Love! December 30, 2014

Our children are becoming physically and mentally much more mature in their behavior. They learn to understand why it is good to serve others.  And then we share some warm clothing in the cold season with some needy children .

They donated warm things for children in need.

a1 a2

“I hope these clothes will help some children warm up in this very cold weather.” The children put warm clothing in the donation box.

They understand how to spend time in their schedule with such activities as; Line Time (morning meeting), work time (individual or group activities), special class time, 2nd Line Time for gross motor development and music, gym or outside, lunch time with table manners, birthday parties, nap time, afternoon special project time, etc.

The children have worked very hard with Montessori materials.

b1 b2

N is working with geometric solids and says ” I know this.”              Two children work together with Pythagoras Board.

b3 b4

We built Christmas lights with Red Rods, Number Rods and Knob Cylinders.                                                                                 J is working with Asia Map wit great concentration.

Two of children had birthdays.  We’re celebrating both S’s and H’s fifth.

c1 c2

They walk around the circle carrying the earth globe in their hands, one time for each year.  In the middle, course, is our sun and the twelve cards are the months.  At the end they blow out the candle but we all know the sun just keeps on going, even so, for the next set of birthdays.

They did some holiday projects for family and friends.

d1 d2

Christmas wreaths and smiles.                                                                 ” Look at my snowflakes.”

d3 d4

Hand painting and a smile.                                                                    Meticulous work making ornaments.

“OK, I’m going to hold my hand just like you.”                                                    Here’s my gift for Mommy.

Near the end of the school year in June, the children become more connected with nature and with one another as they are ready to finish their school year strong.  And throughout this past year, teachers have assisted children in their physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development.

First, let’s see how they maximize their learning through Olympics Day Competition!

Language and Special Activities May 8, 2014

With Spring season coming in, our Dayspring children have been very productive in their learning.  In particular, a lot of the children are passionate about learning the language area and how to sound out letters, words, and eventually write and read.

This 2 1/2-year-old child is building vocabulary, as well as matching to its proper beginning consonant sound.

After mastering all initial consonant sounds and vowel sounds, children begin to spell out the words (using VEC cards and movable alphabets).

Story reading is also a big part of learning language. Here, children are entranced with the story and the illustrations involved.

Focus and concentration 100%

Another way to learn language is through Show and Tell time.

The children are able to exercise coordination and concentration as they hone their skills in balancing, twirling, bending knees, and coordinating ballet movements into a song.  The dance the children are doing with the handkerchief is especially beautiful for they become entranced with the story of the music (about searching for a “rose”, finding it, and being so supremely happy that they twirl and toss the “rose”).

In Music class, the children have begun to sing two special songs using 4 different kinds of xylophones.  These songs will be sung by all the children as 4 xylophones are being played.  These songs, in addition to piano performances, and choir songs will be displayed in our upcoming Spring Sing Ceremony in May 2014.

Also, we can always bring in a special item that we’ve earned or caught over the weekend!  A child who went ice fishing brings back his prize to share to the rest of the class.

Every day is an extraordinary day for Dayspring Montessori.  We constantly encourage finding new discoveries, as well as mastering the materials presented to us.  As Maria Montessori quotes, “Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.”
